The
Pousada Barão de Forrester is
located in the
centre of Alijó, it’s the only
Pousada of Portugal inserted in the
Douro Wine Region. This is a newly constructed building since 1944 to host this hotel unit. The name of the Pousada is a tribute to Joseph James Forrester, an english businessman, rooted in Portugal during the 19th century who, in 1855, has received from the King D. Fernando II the title of Baron because of its dedication to the study and appreciation of
Douro and
Port Wine.
In 2013 the Pousada reopened after the renovation of the indoors, designed by the architect Paulo Gomes. The character Baron Forrester, as well as the majesty of the Douro Region were the frame matrix of the indoors’ design.
The result is amazing: the Pousada breathes a contemporary environment, keeping its regional roots visible in each detail. The Douro environment is also visible in each of the 21 rooms, referring the visitor to the moments and landscapes of the Douro Valley.
