"A unique region"
Hilly land, of deep valleys and high peaks, of wild nature and ancient traditions and culture, the
Douro contains in itself a very own way of being and living. More than 250 years have separated the visitor from the visionary mind of
Marquês de Pombal, who established in 1756 the General Company of Agriculture of
Alto Douro Vineyards. Since then, this region meet its first demarcation in order to ensure the quality of the produced wine. Ever since the wine, transported in ancient times in the famous boats Rabelos until the basements of Vila Nova de Gaia, gained fame and the connection of the region to this product have deeply taken root in the culture and habits of these people. Thus was born the
Port Wine which since early has become the icon of the portuguese exports.
And nowadays, which was once a prompt river, its an extensive water mirror, centre of the
Douro Wine Region. From its borders, 250 thousand hectares of terracing is going over the river. Its there where the Port Wines of exceptional quality and the more and more respected DOC Douro are produced.
